To our valued customers,
We recently learned that some of you have seen the California Proposition 65 warning label on our pepper and salt mills — and because you care about product safety, you asked a very reasonable question:
“If your mills are lead‑free, why is there a Prop 65 warning?”
We appreciate your vigilance, and we’d like to give you a clear, honest answer.
First and most importantly: Yes, our mills are lead‑free.
Independent testing confirms that no lead is intentionally added, and no harmful levels of lead are present in our products.
So why the Prop 65 label?
California’s Proposition 65 is one of the strictest chemical warning laws in the world. It covers over 900 substances — including lead — but also many other chemicals that appear in trace amounts in common materials like stainless steel, brass, plastics, or even food-grade coatings.
Under Prop 65, a warning is required if a product contains any listed chemical above an extremely low “safe harbor” level — often far below what science considers harmful. To stay fully compliant and avoid any legal risk, many responsible manufacturers (including us) choose to place the warning as a precaution, even when no specific chemical is known to be present at unsafe levels.
In our case, we added the Prop 65 label not because our mills failed a safety test, but because we want to be transparent and cautious. Some generic components in the supply chain could theoretically contain trace amounts of a Prop 65 chemical — not enough to harm anyone, but enough to trigger the law’s labeling requirement.
Does this mean our product is dangerous?
No. The warning is a legal formality, not a health alert. Your pepper and salt mills are made from food‑safe, lead‑free materials and are perfectly safe for everyday use.
What should you do?
Continue using our mills with confidence. If you prefer to avoid Prop 65 labels entirely, we respect that — but please know that in many cases, including ours, the label exists for legal compliance, not because a real risk has been found.
Our promise to you
We will always be honest about what goes into our products. If you have specific questions about materials or test results, we are happy to share more information.
Thank you for caring about safety — and for giving us the chance to explain.
Sincerely,
